As the news about reinstatement of the deposed Chief Justice, Iftikhar Chaudhry was announced, Multan turned into a city of festivity. Hundreds of people came out of their houses to celebrate the acceptance of the demands of civil society and the lawyers community. They used crackers and chanted slogans like Iftikhar Chaudhry Zindabad and Independent Judiciary Zindabad.
Soon after the Prime Ministers announcement to reinstate Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, large number of lawyers, civil society members, political activists thronged the residence of Makhdoom Javed Hashmi to congratulate her daughter MNA Memona Hashmi on achievement of the objective and CJs reinstatement.
The women workers of the PML-N distributed sweets and greetd each other in front of the Multan Press Club under the leadership of provincial Vice President, Qurban Fatima. The MNA, Memona Hashmi led a rally, which was attended by more than 500 activists to receive the arrested PML-N, JI, Tehrik-i-Insaf activists at the gates of News Central Jail and District Jail. Local newspapers gave proper coverage to the address of the Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani to the nation and delayed the publications.
People greeted and congratulated each other through SMS, telephone calls and other means of communications. While Tariq Naeem ullah Khan was released from the Cantonment Police station and was taken to home by the cheering crowd in the procession. More than 1000 Lawyers also celebrated the day of achievement of their objective in the District and High Court Bars.
They Lawyers, civil society activists and political workers danced to the beat of drums, waving party flags and chanted slogans in favour of the reinstated CJ Iftikhar. Lawyers also offered thanks giving prayers in the LHC mosque and termed the decision as a victory of lawyers, political parties, civil society and the media. Jamaat-e-Islami organised a big rally to celebrate its achievement.
President of High Court Bar Multan, Mehmood Ashraf Khan welcomed the re-instatement of all deposed judges including the CJ Iftikhar and declared that the lawyers movement has achieved the target of the independence of judiciary. We understand from the address of the PM Gilani that the judiciary is being restored to its November 2 position, he said.
Talking to newsmen on Monday, Mehmood said that all the deposed judges including the CJ Iftikhar have been restored as a result of the struggle of lawyers, political parties, civil society and media.
He said that achieving the target reinstatement was apparently difficult, but it was possible due to peaceful nature of the movement. He said that the restoration of free judiciary would pave the way for justice, peace and tranquillity in the country.
He said that it was lawyers movement, which had ensured transparent elections and a powerful parliament, but the lawyers real target was free judiciary. Mehmood reiterated his demand of recovery of all missing persons including those from Balochistan and equal treatment to all the provinces.
