Lost its judiciary battle, the Presidency is not giving up on Punjab front that could harm the possible reconciliation between the two major political parties on implementation of Charter of Democracy (CoD). The real issue whether there is reconciliation in the store or confrontational politics will again strike the national scene following the historic decision of reinstatement of deposed judges.
The leaders, who matter in the PPP, are keeping their fingers crossed right now. The PML (N) is showing its strength in the Punjab Assembly with the support of the PML (Q) forward bloc.
However, this strength is not accepted by Punjab Governor Salman Taseer as he demanded of all the parties present in Punjab to show their strength by forming alliance with each other. "Showing strength by forming forward bloc is simply unacceptable for summoning the assembly session and lifting the Governors Rule," an analyst put Salman Taseer words in this way.
Sources in PPP said that party Central Executive Committee (CEC) is meeting on Thursday (today) and there could be some major development after the meeting. To be held here in the presidency, the CEC will be presided over by President and the party co chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
The President and the Prime Minister held a brief one-on-one meeting and discussed the political situation. They discussed the partys future line of action in the present scenario. They also discussed the Punjab situation and the Prime Minister is said to have asked the President to lift the Governors Rule as early as possible. They also discussed the possibility of reviving the PPP-PML (N) alliance in the province.
An analyst said that future politics is linked to deal between the PPP and the PML (N). This deal is the key to overall political and economic stability in the country. The idea of strengthening the parliament depends on the mutual co-operation of the two major political parties, he added.
"Initial indications suggest that the Presidency will not let it happen," he said. The PPP leaders who had some other point of view on judicial crisis and Governors Rule in Punjab are being expelled from influential circles of the party. The former information minister Sherry Rehman, who is also holding the office of the PPP information secretary, was shown the door. Raza Rabbani does not matter any more in the PPP influential circles anymore.
Some circles are of the view that Zardari used his influence of Presidency in the judicial crisis. On other unresolved issues such as the formation of the government in Punjab, he will use his influence of the ruling partys de facto leader.
It is very hard to believe that Zardari will agree to surrender his powers he is having under 17th Amendment of the Constitution. Awami Muslim League President Sheikh Rashid predicted on Wednesday that the first victim of Zardaris wrath could be Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani after the reinstatement of deposed judges. But at the same time, he said that Gilani is being backed by the countrys establishment.
PML (N) is keen that Governors Rule in Punjab be lifted immediately. The governor should summon the Punjab Assembly session as the party could prove its majority in the house. But definitely, the PML (N) will need the support of the PML (Q) forward bloc. There are some indications that PPP and the PML (N) might revive their coalition in Punjab. According to the PPP leader, this is the issue, which will be discussed in the CEC meeting today.
