Even as he faces flak over his alleged communal speech, Varun Gandhi has received support from Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, who has lauded his statements against the Indian Muslims. In an editorial of party mouthpiece Saamna, Thackeray wrote, Whatever he has said is completely true and he should not be apologetic about it, Zeenews reported.
He compared the young Gandhi to his father saying, He is very much like his father Sanjay Gandhi. Thackeray, known for his dislike for the Congress in general and Gandhis in particular, welcomed Varun and said, Such a Gandhi is acceptable. The Sena supremo, who rose to fame on the Hindutva plank, appreciated Varuns Hindutva credentials and wrote, This boy is filled with the spirit of Hindutva and can be its saviour.
Chiding the BJP, Thackeray said, BJP should support him rather than distancing itself from Varuns comment. Varun is in a spot of bother after his speech at rally in Pilibhit drew sharp criticism from various quarters for having communal overtones.
