The government has approved representation of the minorities in Senate of Pakistan besides reserving five percent service quota for them for the first time in the country.
The Ministry of Minorities Affairs has submitted the draft bill for introduction of nine reserve seats in Senate to the Ministry of Law for approval, disclosed Federal Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti during an interview with APP here on Sunday.
Besides, the Prime Minister has issued directions for reserving five percent service quota for minorities and a notification will be issued soon, the Minister added on the completion of one year of democratic government.
The Minister dwelt at length on various issues concerning the minorities and representation of the minorities in the National and Provincial Assemblies according to the their population, the performance of the Evacuee Trust Property Board, the welfare of minorities and their shrines in Pakistan and others.
The minorities five percent quota has been reserved in the Central Superior Services of Pakistan, federal and provincial services and Public Sector Corporations, he said.
Presently there are 10 reserved seats for the minorities in the National Assembly, 23 in Punjab Assembly, 9 in Sindh Assembly and 3 each in Balochistan and NWFP Assemblies. The present strength of minority members is likely to be doubled following the new population census later this year, the Minister said.
