Co-chairman PPP and President Asif Ali Zardari has urged the people to pray for the long life and health of former first lady of Pakistan and former federal minister Begum Nusrat Bhutto. He made this call in a message on the 80th birthday of Begum Nusrat Bhutto falling on Monday, March 23.
Paying rich tributes to Begum Nusrat Bhutto, the President said, "Begum Nusrat Bhutto stands out tall as an icon in the great struggle for democracy and human rights in late seventies and early eighties." Her heroic struggle illumined the path traversed by future generations, he said.
He said that Begum Nusrat Bhutto played many roles in life. As leader of the MRD she led the people from the front against forces of tyranny and dictatorship. When dictatorship was defeated she galvanised the party by holding the first nation wide elections of the women wing of the party.
She has the proud distinction of being the wife of a prime minister, mother of twice-elected prime minister and mother-in-law of a President of the country. The President said that in the annals of political struggle of Pakistan, Begum Nusrat Bhutto will always be mentioned with respect and admiration no matter on which side of the political divide the chronicler stood. The courage with which she braved personal tragedies and misfortunes is exceptional, he said.
Even in a distant age and clime, people will draw inspiration from her example and will be lifted to lofty aims, the President said. President Asif Ali Zardari also appealed to the nation to pray for the long life and health of "this extraordinary woman of Pakistan the likes of whom are born once in generations".-PR
