Workers voted on Sunday to end a sit-in protest at Waterford Wedgwoods Irish plant after agreeing to a proposal over jobs with the luxury tableware makers new owner and the receiver, a trade union said. The companys receiver said last month US private equity group KPS Capital Partners will buy assets of the groups British and Irish businesses.
A source familiar with the transaction had said last month KPS was not acquiring the production facilities at the groups flagship Waterford crystal plant in Ireland or its equipment.
Waterford Wedgwood had called in receivers Deloitte in January after failing to buy more time from creditors. Workers at the crystal plant had started an indefinite protest of plans by the receiver to cease production and cut 480 jobs.
"The sit in at Kilbarry, which began on January 30th after the closure of the plant by receiver David Carson will now be ended over the next 24 hours," the Unite trade union said in a statement on Sunday.
