Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) has demanded the abolition of new licensing rules for cargo and custom clearing agents saying that these rules are tantamount to deprive a huge population linked with this business from bread.
Government should abolish these rules and facilitate custom clearing agents by removing other hurdles in obtaining licenses, said Syed Asad Mashhadi, President RCCI here on Friday.
The decision of some foreign airlines to charge the damages from custom agents, will not only harm the business of custom clearing agents but also damage the trade and economy of the country, Mashhadi said while addressing the meeting of RCCI Standing Committee on Customs and Cargo. The meeting held at chamber house with Chairman SC Akhtar Bukhari in the chair.
The Chairman of the Committee, Akhtar Bukhari demanded of the government to finish the double taxation system on imports and tax may be deducted once on total value of imported goods. He said that inland transportation of goods through private carriers may be allowed to custom clearing agents. The freight charges of the bounded carriers are too high and out of the reach, he added.
The shipping companies should also be asked to deliver empty container to clearing agents at dry ports, Bukhari said. The committee also showed its resentment on issuing notices for audit to the custom clearing agents by sales tax department. The committee also suggested that special identity cards by Custom Department should be issued to clearing agents. Custom clearing agents expressed their satisfaction over completion of separate hall for them at cargo complex Islamabad airport. They also requested the city district government Rawalpindi to construct an overhead bridge on airport road in front of cargo office to avoid any mishap.
