The rupee ended the final session of the week at the dismal note due to strong demand for dollars, losing 10 paisa for buying and selling at 80.50 and 80.55 on the interbank market, currency dealers said. The US currency was dearer as importers were active to cover the forward buying, mainly because of payment requirements, money observers said.
At the weekend on the NY market dollar posted its largest one-day gain against euro in more than two months, boosted by a growing view that the European Central Bank may be the next to purchase its own bonds to stimulate growth.
Weak US stocks also drew safe-haven bids toward dollar compared with the single euro-zone currency. The currency was further pressured by comments from German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck suggesting fiscal irresponsibility in Europe could put the euro at risk.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee retained its overnight level for buying versus dollar at 80.40 and it shed 10 paisa for selling at 80.70, they said. The rupee, however, gained sharply in relation to euro for buying and selling at at Rs 106.50 and Rs 107.50, they added.
