A gunman Sunday shot dead six people and injured three others, including a police officer, in a shooting spree at a nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina, local media reported, citing police. The shooter was injured in the attack and taken with other victims to a local hospital, WRAL television reported.
Police did not say what motivated the deadly attack or what the shooters relationship with the facility might be. The gunman, who police did not name, entered the 90-bed rehabilitation, nursing and Alzheimers care facility around 10:00 am (1500 GMT) and began shooting, Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie told WRAL.
Multiple law enforcement agenies were investigating. Emily Sloane, spokeswoman for the county hospital told CNN six patients were brought into the emergency department Sunday morning. She said one was in surgery and one had been released. She would not confirm, however, that the shooter was among those being treated. "We are the only hospital in moore county, so it was natural that those patients would be transferred here to the hospital," she said. "We activated our emergency plan when we got the notification.
