Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said it is an attack on Pakistan and the nation will have either to fight it out or hand over the country to the Taliban. "The nation must show unity," he told reporters after visiting the Manawan Police Academy on Monday evening.
Discouraging the media on drawing any conclusion before the investigation team completes investigation, Malik said the Federal government would ensure funds, in collaboration with its international partners, for provision of fully equipped force, consisting of 25,000 persons to each province to combat terrorism.
He told reporters that he had announced on the floor of the house that the government had information about the entry of terrorists in Pakistan to target leadership during the long march. According to him, the government also had a lead that the terrorists might hit the police buildings and the information was passed on to the respective circles accordingly. "Therefore, the law-enforcement agencies reacted timely to the Manawan incident and they controlled the situation soon," he added.
Malik said the tragic incident resulted in eight deaths, while leaving 99 injured, including two civilians. "Three terrorists have blown themselves up inside building and one terrorist was arrested, besides two more suspects," he said, adding: "One explosive-laden jacket was also recovered from the building, besides sophisticated weapons."
He also said that no one from among the injured, admitted to the city hospitals, would be discharged, as a few terrorists might also be there in the garb of policeman. Malik also extended whole-hearted appreciation to the law-enforcement agencies, and commended their role in rescue operation. He also expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff for extending all out help in the rescue operation.
