With the rise in temperature in the upper mountainous regions of the country the snow has started melting and the water inflows in four rivers, Indus, Kabul, Jhelum and Chenab have increased during last two days. Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) engineers told /Business Recorder that combined water inflows in the four rivers rose to more than 97,000 cusec on Tuesday morning.
They said the Rabbi crops do not need much irrigation water at this maturity and harvesting stage, so Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has started filling the Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma Reservoirs with the extra water. More than 1million acre feet (MAF) water had been stored in three reservoirs by Tuesday evening.
It may be added that Tarbela Dam and Chashma reservoir had reached dead level at 1369 ft and 637 ft respectively in the first week of March and only run of the river water was released downstream and into the irrigation canals. Engineers said that water level has risen six feet in the Tarbela dam on river Indus and 0.070 million acre feet water has been stored in the reservoirs during the past couple of days.
There was a live storage of 0.198 MAF in the Chashma barrage where water level has risen by about 9 feet. Mangla Dam on river Jhelum, which remained closed for ten days has stored 0.8 MAF water in the reservoir.
LATEST RIVER FLOWS AND RESERVOIRS LEVEL The position of the river inflows/outflows at Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma along with the reservoirs level and the barrages on Tuesday was as under:
