As a last resort, the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has decided to mobilise the City Wardens to close all illegal Bachat Bazaars across the city and recover the outstanding dues from the defaulters.
The Enterprise and Investment Promotion (E&IP) department in collaboration with the Land and Management department of the CDGK initiated the move through the City Wardens, who were basically recruited to save the city infrastructure. Ironically, by entrusting these Wardens with the new task, the CDGK would be redefining their duties, which was earlier restricted to look after the city infrastructure only.
According to official sources in the Enterprise & Investment Promotion Group of Offices (E&IPGO) of the CDGK, over 30 illegal Bachat Bazaars in the metropolis were running despite the governments warnings and notifications for the last six months.
These Bazaars were mostly being held on different parks, playgrounds and other vacant areas of the city outskirts, they added. Further, With the help of the Wardens, we have stopped some illegal bazaars in the last few days, they said adding that during the drive, Bazaars that were not paying the outstanding dues of the CDGK for the last six months, would also be closed down.
The CDGK they said had previously warned the defaulting organisers of Bachat Bazaars of not only the closure of Bazaar, but also of legal action, in case they fail to pay the outstanding dues by the given deadline.
More than 70 Bachat Bazaars, being held with the governments NOC, would be repealed, if the organisers fail to act upon the governments directives, they added. The monthly fee, they said, charged on the Bazaars varied between Rs 3, 000 to Rs 80, 000 in different categories, depending on the space of land they occupy.
The CDGK has already closed at least 23 illegal bazaars, but more than 15 bazaars were still running illegally in the city outskirts, mostly in the areas of Landhi and Korangi. According to the sources, three Monday Bachat Bazaars, one in Universal Town, last stop of Korangi No 1 1/2, Second in Zaman Town near Abuzer Bazaar Bakery, Korangi No 4 and the third one in social ground behind Abdul Ghafoor sweet shop, Korangi-6, were running illegally.
Separately, two Tuesday Bachat Bazaars in Sharifabad, Korangi Industrial Area and Dhobee Gath ground, behind post office, Landhi No 4J. In addition, four Wednesday Bachat Bazaars in Chakra Goth, Korangi No 1 and Doubike Road, Bismillah Shop, Area 34/2, Korangi No 2 1/2, Bila Colony, Service Road, Korangi and Service Road off Masjid Korangi No 4, were enlisted as illegal Bazaars by the CDGK.
Five more illegal Bazaars were the Thursday Bazaars in Guizar Colony, Korangi Industrial Area, Universal Town, Korangi No 1 V2, Korangi No 2 1/2 Coast Guard Chaurangi, Korangi No 1 1/2, Petrol Pump Gali, Eidgah Ground, R Area, Landhi No 2, Inami Ground, Landhi.
Also there was a Saturday Bachat Bazaar on Ghous Pak Road, G Area, Korangi No 4 in the limits of Korangi. These Bazaars, they said, were not only creating hurdles in execution of uplift projects in different parts of the city, but also causing many civic issues in the areas where they were being held.
