General Secretary Pakistan Peoples Party Sindh and member of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) Nafees Sadiqui on Friday said that next year of PPP-led government will bring progress and prosperity for the poor segment of the country.
"Soon after coming into power the government faced a host of problems. But with the blessing of Almighty Allah most of these have been resolved in an amicable way," he said while talking to APP here. He said the political acumen of President Asif Ali Zardari had thwarted all threats to the fledgling democracy and there was no danger to it now and it would strengthen with each passing day.
Terming PPP, a party of the poor, he said the government was fully aware of peoples problems and would soon introduce policies for mitigating their sufferings. He said provision of jobs, education and other basic facilities was top most priority of the government.
"The economic condition of the country has started improving and soon its benefits will start trickling down to the poor masses," he added. Replying to a question, he said that the government was committed to wiping out the menace of extremism and terrorism. He however, made it clear that Pakistan was a sovereign country and no one would be allowed to intervene in its sovereignty under the pretext of extremism and terrorism.
Nafees said that Pakistan was fighting the war against terrorism for its own sake adding, "this war is also in worlds interest." Stressing the need for national reconciliation, he said that after a long time, democracy had returned to the country. Now, it is the responsibility of all political forces to shun differences and work for national unity and foil the designs of those who want to derail the democratic system, he added.
To another question, the PPP leader said that the restoration of judiciary would benefit PPP, as its leadership did not make it a matter of ego and acted in the larger national interest.
"The credit for judges restoration goes to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari. However, the party does not want to do point scoring on it," he added. He said it was Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, who set the foundations for a change in the country by adopting a reconciliatory approach.
To a question, he said that the governor rule in Punjab was imposed, as after the courts judgement a political vacuum had arisen in the province. "It was a need at that time and imposed according to the constitution. When that need finished it was lifted," he added.
Nafees Sadiqui termed PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif a mature politician and said he had exhibited great wisdom in disassociating himself from APDM. He said Pakistani media was mature and it was not hostile against the government. "Media is an important pillar of the state and it should play its role in the national interest," he added. He said the upcoming CEC meeting of Pakistan Peoples Party was very important as in it certain decisions would be taken regarding partys future line of action.
