As many as 5076 people in the metropolis were deprived of four wheelers, two wheelers, cash, cell phones and other valuables during March 2009. Sources at the Central Police Office (CPO) told Business Recorder on Tuesday that total 430 people were deprived of cars - 152 snatched and 278 stolen.
Gulshan-e-Iqbal remained the notorious hunting ground in respect of car snatching where 32 persons lost their vehicles. Eighteen cars each were snatched at gun point in Shah Faisal and North Nazimabad Town, 17 in Bin Qasim Town, 11 each in Clifton Gadap and Jamshaid Town, 7 each in New Karachi and Korangi Town, 5 in Gulberg Town, 4 each in Landhi and Liaquatabad Town, 2 each in Baldia and Keamari Town, and one each at Orangi, Saddar and Site Town.
Similarly, 278 cars were stolen in the city and the worst-hit was Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town where 46 cars were stolen during last month. Forty-four cars each were stolen/snatched at gun point in Clifton and Saddar town, 38 in Jamshaid Town, 26 in North Nazimabad Town, 24 in Shah Faisal Town, 14 each in New Karachi, Gulberg and Liaquatabad Town, 5 in Landhi Town, 3 in Bin Qasim Town, 2 each in Gadap and Korangi Town and one each in Lyari and Site Town.
A total of 1133 people were deprived of their motorcycles: 254 were snatched while 879 were stolen in March. Twenty-eight motorcycles were snatched in Korangi Town, 26 each in New Karachi and Saddar Town, 22 in Jamshaid Town, 20 each in Gadap and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, 18 each in Bin Qasim and North Nazimabad Town, 17 in Shah Faisal Town, 11 in Lyari Town, 9 in Landhi Town, 8 in Gulberg Town, 7 in Keamari Town, 6 each in Liaquatabad and Orangi Town, 5 in Baldia Town, 4 in Clifton Town and 3 in Site Town.
Eight hundred and seventy nine motorcycles were stolen in different areas of the metropolis; 196 in Saddar, 66 each in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Jamshaid Town, 62 in Clifton Town, 61 in Liaquatabad Town, 53 each in Bin Qasim, Shah Faisal and New Karachi Town, 44 in North Nazimabad Town, 42 each in Lyari and Korangi Town, 36 in Gulberg Town, 34 in Landhi Town, 24 in Orangi Town, 15 in Keamari Town, 12 each in Baldia and Gadap Town and eight from Site Town.
As many as 3513 cell phones were snatched and stolen in March. Out of these 1264 cell phone were snatched and 2249 stolen, 186 cell phone were snatched in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, 158 in Saddar Town, 105 in Jamshaid town, 103 in North Nazimabad, 75 in New Karachi, 79 in Liaquatabad, 69 in Clifton, 74 in Gulberg Town, 67 in Bin Qasim Town, 57 in Korangi, 54 in Shah Faisal Town, 45 in Orangi Town, 42 in Gadap Town, 38 in Keamari Town, 33 in Site Town, 32 each in Landhi and Lyari Town, 14 in Baldia Town and only one was snatched from Malir Town.
Two thousand, two hundred and forty nine cell phone were stolen in the city last month; 296 from Saddar Town, 292 in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, 206 in Clifton, 181 in Jamshaid town, 140 in North Nazimabad Town, 134 in Bin Qasim Town, 128 in Shah Faisal Town, 127 in Korangi, 112 in Liaquatabad Town, 94 in Gulberg Town, 86 each in Landhi and New Karachi Town, 82 in Orangi Town, 69 in Gadap Town, 64 in Keamari Town, 55 in Lyari Town, 47 in Site Town, 43 in Baldia Town and 6 from Malir Town last month. High crime rate was recorded in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Saddar Town.
