British Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sadiq Khan has said that young people by acquiring knowledge about contemporary world can serve their societies better and promote global peace.
Talking to media on Wednesday after interacting with the participants of Art for Peace and Tolerant Society project at University College of Home Economics in Mirpur, the British under Secretary said, "I am inspired by the ideas and skills of young people" and hoped that such an approach will encourage the youth to express their feelings through the medium of art. "The British government and the people are proud of their co-operation to promote active citizenship in Pakistan."
Sadiq Khan interacted with the students and asked about their ideas of a peaceful and tolerant society. "Young people after understanding the system of governance can hold their representative accountable and make their democratic experiences meaningful", he added. A countrywide art contest among students from various streams of education to promote culture of peace and tolerance is being implemented by the Centre for Civic Education in Pakistan and it involved 500 students, including 90 students from Madaris (religious seminaries). On this occasion the students explained the themes of their paintings and choice of verses for calligraphy.
Dean of the College, Rafia Khanum said, "The Art contest was such an inspiring activity, that the college will be establishing its fine arts department." Zafarullah Khan, executive director of Centre for Civic Education apprised the British under Secretary about the Centres activities, involving young people to capacitate them as "ambassadors of peaceful change."-PR
