The Supreme Court will remain within its ambit but will address the problems of people including the issue of missing persons, said Acting Chief Justice Javed Iqbal, here on Thursday. Addressing the media after taking oath of Acting Chief Justice, he said that the apex court would soon take up the case of missing person, adding almost 101 missing persons have been recovered on courts order and the remaining would also be found.
Justice Javed Iqbal said there was a difference of opinion on actual number of missing persons which is yet to be decided but the issue cannot be resolved without the help of government. He asked the media to highlight the recovery of these persons by the court.
Justice Javed Iqbal said that the judiciary would not cross its limit, maintaining that the institutions should not adopt a course of collision. "Judicial activism has become inevitable due to the problems of the public", he added.
While talking about the appointments of judges the Acting Chief Justice said that "Judges should be appointed on merit". He added that Parliament has its own defined-business and the judiciary is not a law-making institute but is responsible of enforcing the law.
He termed the efforts to end corruption a joint cause of the nation and judiciary, assuring the newsmen that every step of the judiciary would be in the interest of the country. Earlier Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan administered the oath to Acting Chief Justice to Justice Javed Iqbal at a ceremony held here at Supreme Court.
Justice Javed Iqbal would perform his duties as Acting Chief Justice in the absence of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who is presently on a visit to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. Judges of the Supreme Court, Attorney General for Pakistan , Federal Law Secretary, Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan, Officers of the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, Lawyers and Law Officers of the Court attended the ceremony. Dr Faqir Hussain, Registrar Supreme Court conducted the proceedings of oath taking ceremony.
