NWFP Minister for Information, Mian Iftikhar Hussein on Thursday said that the provincial government will take any kind of measure for provision of protection to the people, but will never allow miscreants to derail the peace process.
Addressing a one-day seminar titled Nizam-e-Adal Regulations-a review held here at Peshawar Press Club (PPC) under the auspices of the Directorate of Information, he said that the provincial government had directed Commissioner Malakand to tell militants in unequivocal to shun the display of arms.
The seminar was also attended by Minister for Law Arshad Abdullah, Minister for Education Sardar Hussein Babak, Minister for Livestock Hidayatullah Khan, Minister for Forests Wajid Ali Khan and Minister for Science and Technology, Mohammad Ayub Khan.
The steps, he said were taken for defusing of situation in the troubled Swat. He termed the broadcasting of the flogging of a girl by militants a conspiracy against the peace initiatives of the provincial government.
He said that the provincial government had signed agreement Maulana Sufi Mohammad led TNSM and not with any militant group, who had announces support for it. The agreement was old and made to meet the longstanding demand of the people, which would be filled through the enforcement of Nizam-e-Adal in the area.
Mian Iftikhar Hussein, who is also official spokesman of the provincial government defended the much triumphant agreement signed between the provincial government and banned TNSM for the enforcement of Nizam-e-Adal Regulations in Malakand division and district Kohistan of the Hazara region for restoration of peace and normalcy in the turbulent districts.
Mian Iftikhar Hussein said that Nizam-e-Adal Regulations agreement had been signed for the restoration of peace in Swat and other turbulent districts of the division. He said it was according to the Constitution of 1973.
The system, he said had even before enforcement ushered improvement in the situation resulting in the opening of the closed police stations, bazaars, schools, hospitals and roads in the district. The life, he said had started returning to Swat.
In the wake of the criticising of the civil society and West after the broadcast of the flogging of girl, he said the government was combating the propaganda with the support of its coalition partners and media.
"We are secular, democratic people and had signed the peace agreement for the establishment of peace and lives of our children," he said adding they are proud over it. He urged media to help remove the misconception of the people regarding the matter.
He admitted that presently there will be peace in 60 percent of the district and 40 percent would be disturbed. However, he said as the problem was more than 20 years old, therefore, it would not be resolved instantly.
He said that they had kept federal government on board before signing of agreement. "It is now the responsibility of the President Asif Ali Zardari to sign the draft of the Nizam-e-Adal Regulations as soon as possible," added Mian Iftikhar. He said, he was hopeful that President will sign it soon, he did not spared time to read the draft due to the political situation in the country.
Replying to a question regarding the secular and progressive credibilities of the ANP, he said they are liberal and progressive people and respect civil society. He said that the step had been taken according to the policy and situation in the area. He was of the view that there 80 percent chances of war and 20 percent of peace. The chances of terror was high as troop on both sides of Durand Line have been put on red alert.
Regarding the accusations of toeing the path of establishment, he said that the later had also acknowledged the volume of threats to the country and now they are also forced to review policies for the sake of the protection of the country. He said that they are opposing drone attacks as counter-productive and instead of elimination its strengthening the terrorism. Moreover, he attributed the drone attacks to interference in the sovereignty of Pakistan.
He said that peace in Afghanistan was linked to peace in our province and when United States was ready for negotiations with Taliban then, we will oppose it. Therefore, he said there are 20 percent possibilities of the establishment of peace through the enforcement of Sharia based judicial system in the area.
