Karachiites continue to brave at least 10-hour power outages in most of the city areas as two units of Bin Qasim Thermal Power Plant (BQTPP) of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) remained out of commission on Friday. The closure of unit 4 of BQTPP added to sufferings of the people, as the power utility has done nothing so far to restore power generation from the closed units of BQTPP.
According to sources, the total power generation from Bin Qasim reduced to 730MW as its units 1,3,5,and 6 were generating 105 MW, 170 MW, 200 MW and 195 MW respectively. They said that the peak demands of the city was over 2200MW on Friday while the generation was 1800MW, due to which the city face 400MW shortfall.
However, KESC spokesman insisted that power generation and supply from other sources to the utility was 1950MW against the citys demand 2100 MW. Meanwhile, in a joint statement, the office bearers of Peoples Workers Union (PWU) of KESC demanded immediate nationalisation of the company, as it was being run by inexperienced administration.
The PWU leaders Aslam Samoon and Ayaz Maingal said that the high officials of the public utility, who were getting high salaries had totally failed to smoothly run the company. They also claimed that the management was also conspiring against the democratic government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) by creating an artificial power crisis. They demanded of the federal government to retake the control of the company to minimise the public sufferings.
