India's top farm co-operative, National Agriculture Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), plans to import 25,000 tonnes of tax-free white sugar next month and another 50,000 tonnes by June, government sources told Reuters on Tuesday.
"We are going to have back-to-back arrangements for imports of white sugar," said a senior government official, who did not wish to be identified. Another official directly involved in the decision said five sugar mills from the southern parts of the country have asked NAFED to import a total of 75,000 tonnes of white sugar for them.
