sugarcane-fieldDIGRI: Only three out of 32 sugar mills of Sindh have started crushing and another 17 are in the process athere were no such signs at rest of the mills.

The Sindh government had directed the sugar mills to start the crushing season from November 1, 2011. However, Tharparkar Sugar Mills of Digri subdivision, Matiari Sugar Mills and Ranipur Sugar Mills started the season, but too late.

It is learnt that the concerned department of the Sindh government would take action under law for non-compliance of orders and register cases under the Sugar Act against the mills.

The government had also fixed the rate of sugarcane at Rs.154 per 40 kg but the growers are not content with the rate and are demanding at least Rs.200 to Rs.250 per 40kg.

They also expressed concern on late crushing as according to them sugarcane loses weight during the winter season delaying the next sowing of the crop.
