The rates moved both ways on the currency market on Monday despite the high demand for dollars, money viewers said. On the interbank market the rupee looked ahead, gaining five paisa against dollar for buying at 80.47 and rose by three paisa for selling at 80.52, they said.
In the first Asian trading yen and dollar rose and the Mexican peso fell on concern about the spread of swine flu, which has killed 103 people in Mexico and infected people in the United States and Canada. The World Health Organisation declared the flu a "public health emergency of international concern" that could become a global outbreak of serious disease.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee gave up 10 paisa against dollar for buying at 80.70 and it dropped by 15 paisa for selling at 80.85, they said. The rupee, however, managed to rise versus euro, going up by 85 paisa for buying at Rs 105.40 and by 25 paisa for selling at Rs 106.00, they said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The rupee opened on a negative note and declined by five paisa against the US dollar in the kerb market on Monday. The dollar demand remained intact, pushing the local currency further down. The dollar buying and selling rates increased to Rs 80.85 and Rs 81.15 amid low trading activity against the Saturday's closing of Rs 80.80 and Rs 81.10, respectively, dealers said. However, the rupee recovered some losses and improved by 50 paisa against the pound sterling. The pound was traded at Rs 117.00 and Rs 118.00 on buying and selling counters as compared to last closing of Rs 117.50 and Rs 118.50, respectively, dealers said.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The dollar-rupee parity remained unchanged at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday. The dollar opened at Rs 80.60 (buying) and Rs 80.80 (selling) against same last rate. It did not witness any change in the evening session and closed at Rs 80.60 (buying) and Rs 80.80 (selling). Pound sterling opened at Rs 115 (buying) and Rs 116 (selling) against last rate of Rs 116 (buying) and Rs 117 (selling). It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 115 (buying) and Rs 116 (selling).
