The Supreme Court of Pakistan has commuted death penalty of one Muhammad Idrees into life imprisonment here on Friday. A three member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed and Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed heard the Criminal Appeal No 24-L of 2009 (Muhammad Idrees vs the State) at Branch Registry, Lahore, regarding the death matter in which leave to appeal was granted on 27.02.2009.
It was fixed on 08.05.2009 at Branch Registry, Lahore for final hearing. Sheikh Khizar Hayyat, ASC appeared before the Bench on behalf of appellant, while Irshad Hussain Bhatti appeared on behalf of State. The Bench disposed of the matter converting death penalty in to life imprisonment. Supreme Court officials said that this was in consonance with Judicial Policy formed by the Chief Justice for early dispensation of justice by deciding the matter within six months.
