Apropos a news item "25-foot berth space caves in under heavy cargo" carried by Business Recorder on Tuesday, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has clarified that no berth has collapsed; the storage area of about 1000 sq. meters which is 100 meters away from berth 23 has settled.
The settlement is due to the movement of filled material with passage of time through existing storm water lines. The pavement was constructed in 1980 and during these years the filled material has moved with the subsoil water. The backup area is used to store heavy cargo and due to uneven loadings, slight shifting/settlement of earth is generally encountered. There has been no structural damage due to misuse of the plinth.
