The US Defence Department says it still expects the prison at Guantanamo Bay to be closed by January 2010 as President Barack Obama has ordered. Republicans in Congress contend the prison should remain open until there are solid plans for where to send the 241 detainees being held there.
However, Congress so far is refusing to approve any money for closing Guantanamo if any of the detainees are transferred to the United States. Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters on Tuesday that he sees nothing to indicate the January 2010 deadline will be delayed. Morrell said that as far as he can tell, everything remains on track.
