Chairman Senate Farooq H Naek on Saturday said that Pakistan has started military operation as a last resort to eliminate extremism and terrorism from Swat, Malakand and other adjoining areas and to ensure peace and security in the region.
According to a message received from Oslo, where the Chairman Senate is leading a parliamentary delegation while addressing spring session of Assembly of Oslo said Pakistan had adopted a comprehensive approach of 3Ds policy (Dialogue, Development and Deterrence) and working on it in the Swat, Malakand and other areas where militants have created trouble for the local residents.
He said, 'We have always been asked to do more, now I request the Western world to do more for Pakistan.' Referring to the background and reasons for Swat operation, the Chairman Senate said the government was forced to start the operation following the violation of peace accord by the militants.
Farooq Naek said militants betrayed the peace accord and instead of laying arms, they entered into Buner and other areas and tried to establish parallel government in these areas. Giving detailed briefing to the members of the Oslo Parliament, the Chairman Senate said that the militants challenged the writ of the government therefore, the government as lost option started military operation.
He said Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani asked the military to start the operation against the militants to restore peace and security in the region. Naek said due to the military operation, Pakistan has faced one of the worst and biggest displacement of millions of people from these areas. He said so far more than two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been provided shelter in other areas and being given food and shelter despite limited resources.
The Chairman Senate urged the international community to help Pakistan in facing the challenge of IDPs. Farooq Naek also explained in detail all the issues relating to peace and security in the region including evolving relations of Pak-Afghan-Nato in the back drop of on going war on terror.
