The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has called general house meeting on Friday (tomorrow), June 5, 2009 to decide whether fresh elections should be held or not. Reacting to the news, President Bar, Munawar Iqbal Gondal reiterated his position that an election board can only be formed with the consent of the secretary and that the proposed election on June 6, 2009 would not be allowed to be taken place within the premises of the High Court.
Mian Israr-ul-Haq, a member of the election board, had withdrawn in view of its illegality, he said. He added that the general house meeting, which his administration had called would clarify once and for all the matter at hand.
A senior bar member Manzoor Gillani, who had moved the resolution against present bar president Iqbal Gondal, meanwhile said that his 'independent' group would announce its own candidate on Thursday (today) as 'we are not part of the Hamid Khan group our stance is on principle,' he added.
Hamid Khan group is supporting Nasira Iqbal as president of the bar in next elections. Also on Wednesday, a session of the Lahore Bar, ended inconclusively after the Lahore Bar president Rana Zia Abdul Rehman, attempted to pass a resolution, calling for fresh elections in the LHCBA.
Though Rehman declared that the resolution has been passed, others claimed that no clear majority was obtained on the issue. A High Court advocate, Syed Asif Raza, has moved a resolution of no confidence against Rehman on the grounds that the Lahore Bar is a subordinate body to the LHCBA and has accused Rehman of misconduct.
