Smoking at public parks in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi goes on unchecked in defiance of official restrictions. People, especially youth, are seen smoking at places like Lake View, Damn-e-Koh and Pir Sohawa retreat. Talking to APP, Muhammad Asif, a resident of sector F-6, said tobacco smoke at picnic places was a discouraging factor.
He complained that smoking charas was another nuisance for visitors. Muhammad Atif, a business college teacher, said that smoking and drug addiction was increasing at an alarming pace among youth, including students. Youth smoking at picnic sites is a common sight, he said, adding that 'sheesha' smoking was more harmful than cigarette was becoming popular.
He urged the authorities to enforce rules against smoking at public places and initiate special campaigns to create awareness among people against smoking and drug addiction. Hafiz Tariq, a commuter, said the campaign launched by Islamabad traffic police with collaboration of Ministry of Health against smoking during travel had proved very successful. But, he said people were still involved in smoking at bus stops.
An official of the Health Ministry said that every type of tobacco is hazardous for human health and a separate cell has been formed by the ministry to control tobacco use in the country. He said country's youth are the main target of tobacco companies, which motivate them through various means. An effective awareness drive has been initiated to educate the youth about tobacco hazards.
