A drop in sugar futures prices this week was not enough to reignite demand for Brazilian sugar, traders said on Friday, adding business has been minor and mainly to traditional clients such as India and Russia. Brazilian shipments of sugar in May, however, reached 2.15 million tonnes, a record high for the month, and up 55.8 percent from the same month a year ago, a sign of firm demand in the past few months, according to Datagro analysts.
Local ethanol prices were little changed over the week, according to Cepea, with hydrous ethanol traded at around 695 reais ($355) per cubic meter (1,000 liters), including taxes, at the mill gate.
