In an unexpected development, Chairman National Selection Committee Abdul Qadir on Monday tendered resignation from his office and Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt has accepted the resignation. This sudden move from Chief Selector comes after Pakistan cricket team's defeat by 48 runs at the hands of England in the ICC World Cup Twenty20 match on Sunday.
Earlier, Pakistan have had an unimpressive start to their World T20 campaign, losing both their warm-up fixtures to India and South Africa. Sources close to former magic bowler told Business Recorder that Abdul Qadir had differences with PCB Chairman, which took a new turn after announcement of Pakistan-A team squad for the Australian tour.
According to them, Abdul Qadir was unhappy over interference of PCB management in selection matters. Qadir had resigned when PCB Chairman raised objections over selection of some boys in Pakistan-A squad for Australian tour. It may be mentioned that Abdul Qadir had expressed his concerns over the Pak squad for Twentt20 World Cup in particular Saeed Ajmal's inclusion. Qadir had also reservations over selection of Shahzaib Hasan.
PCB Chief Operating Officer Salim Altaf said that Qadir has given no reason to us in his resignation. The PCB's HR head Wasim Bari said that status of other members of the selection committee ie, ex-Test cricketers Salim Jaffer and Shoaib Mohammad, is for the moment unaffected.
Abdul Qadir who played 67 Tests with 236 wickets and 104 one-day internationals with 132 wickets wanted to pick the best national side and also give exposure to new talent. However, he failed to continue as Chairman Selection Committee. He worked for only about six months. Critics believe that sudden resignation of Abdul Qadir from the office of Chairman National Selection Committee has raised a number of question vis-à-vis affairs in the PCB.
