Federal Minister for Zakat and Usher, Noorul Haq Qadri said that the print and electronic media could play vital role to build confidence between donors and government and project the good work being done by the Ministry. He stated this while presiding over a high level meeting held here to review and discuss ways and means to revamp and streamline the collection and disbursement system of Zakat in the country.
Secretary, Zakat and Ushr Naved Arif, Provincial Ministers for Zakat and Ushr, Chairmen Provincial Zakat Councils, chairman FATA Zakat Council, chairmen District Zakat Councils and senior officials of the Ministry of Zakat and Ushr attended the meeting.
Addressing the meeting, Federal Minister said that his Ministry was not coming up to the expectations of the common man due to wrong perceptions of misappropriation and management in the system. Therefore concrete efforts were being made to streamline and revamp the present system of Zakat for equitable distribution of Zakat funds among the poor, needy and destitute throughout the country, he said. He said that confidence building needed between the donors and the government. He said that a Cabinet Committee had been constituted by the Prime Minister, which comprising five Federal Ministers to streamline and revamp the system of Zakat in the country.
The Federal Minister said that Central Zakat Council had recently donated Rs five Crore for IDPs of the Swat, Malakand and Dir. He said that a web-site on Zakat system would soon be launched which will provide detailed information on the activities being undertaken with Zakat donations that will provide confidence to the donors. Secretary Zakat and Ushr, Naved Arif briefed the participants about the role and functions of the Ministry and underlined the need to enhance the earnings. Positive proposals and suggestions were presented for improvement in the system of Zakat which will now be presented to the Central Zakat Council and the Cabinet Committee for approval and implementation.
