A row has ignited over plans to close down the only cargo office of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in Blue Area, the busiest financial centre of the capital. The PIA has informed the people to collect and book their parcels and diplomatic mail from Rawalpindi cargo terminal and the doors of PIA's Blue Area cargo office will be permanently shut down on July 16.
Talking to Business Recorder on Friday, leaders of different trader unions, business community and people living in the capital expressed concern that the decision is being rushed through by making it difficult for the Islamabad business community.
They said the PIA's top management did not bother to consult its clients or the business community before taking this unilateral decision, which would badly affect traders as well as local people. They urged PIA to withdraw its decision immediately or be ready to face the consequences because closure of the cargo office would affect the business community and add to the miseries of the local people.
The proposed closure of the cargo office in Islamabad has been decided by top management of PIA without any public consultation or discussions with any traders association. Meanwhile, sources at PIA told this correspondent that the plan is a brainchild of the managing director of PIA Captain Ejaz Haroon. Closure of the only cargo centre from the busiest financial centre of the capital is an inappropriate decision, they added on condition of anonymity.
