The Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has hailed the prime minister's decision to stop proposed 17 per cent increase in power tariff and termed it a step that would go a long way for the revival of economic activity in the country.
The PIAF Chairman, Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, Vice Chairmen Iqbal Baig Chugtai and Khawaja Shahzeb Akram in a joint statement here on Saturday said that they had already conveyed to the government that increase in power tariff was not viable at the moment when the industry was facing massive outages.
The office bearer said that they have proposed to the government that cut in line losses, efficiency in electricity generation, improvement in recovery, reduction in expenditure and increase in conservation could help bridge demand supply gap.
The prime minister deserves appreciation for taking care of not only the industry of the country but masses as well and they hoped that he would continue to popular support in future as well. If the decision regarding 17 per cent increase in the power tariff was implemented it would have earned a bad name for the government who otherwise had taken many business friendly decisions in the budget, they added.
They urged the Prime Minister to take urgent measures to minimise duration of load shedding as it was hitting the entire industrial sector, particularly the textile sector hard. Because of acute shortage of electricity, the textile sector could only meet 40 per cent of its total 65 per cent share in exports while a number textile units have partially suspended their operations, they said. They hoped that after the clear instructions by he Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, the authorities concerned would ensure cut in line losses, efficiency in electricity generation, improvement in recovery, reduction in expenditure.
