The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has suggested that the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan's (TDAP) scheme for the support of retail sales outlets abroad should be extended to wholesale outlets. In a communication to the Federal Minister for Commerce, the KCCI pointed out that the TDAP scheme for the support of retail outlets abroad supports a low export value vs. high retail cost.
This scheme should be extended to wholesale outlets as it would generate far more in export volumes than retail, it said. The chamber pointed out that Pakistan being a Islamic country could take benefit of its reputation by producing and exporting Halal packaged foods to world-wide markets. A macro level research should be conducted to find out how the private sector builds its capability to produce ready-to-eat meals and marinated and cooked foods, it added.
This industry does not depend on cheaper raw materials but its marketing and image as well as authenticity as to whether it is Halal or not is more important besides packaging, shelf life and taste.
The chamber noted that Pakistan has the potential to achieve a sizeable share of export of Halal food, confectionery and biscuits in short span of time as the demand for these categories is increasing all over the world including Middle East. In this category Pakistan can take advantage of its Islamic heritage to capitalise on Halal products' concept.
