Speakers at a seminar have underlined the need to settle Kashmir dispute amicably through dialogue process to bring sustainable development and security in South Asia. Dr Sheikh Shaukat Hussain, a professor of Kashmir University, speaking at the seminar on "Kashmir - The Way Forward" organised by Greater Kashmir Foundation in occupied Srinagar, said that India was buying time since 1947 to delay the resolution of the dispute, KMS reported.
He said that in absence of other means when Kashmiris observed strikes and staged protests they were branded as extremists. The Vice Chancellor of Islamic University, Professor Siddiq Wahid said that Kashmir dispute had become layered, which needed political archaeologists to resolve it.
Dr Altaf Hussain talked about genesis of Kashmir dispute. Dr Hameeda Naeem, a professor in Kashmir University, said that seven hundred million Indian troops in Jammu and Kashmir were not deployed for the security of the valley but to control the local population. She maintained that road to peace in South Asia moved through Kashmir and stressed India to withdraw troops from the occupied valley.
Dr Agha Ashraf strongly condemned the rape and killing of two Kashmir women by Indian troops in Shopian. Aijaz-ul-Haq, a columnist said factors like fear and sycophancy had marred the intelligentsia of the occupied territory. Senior lawyer, Zafar Ahmad Shah explained the concept called freedom. Noted columnist, Z.G Muhammad threw light on Obama administration's possible role in settlement of Kashmir.
"US is now maintaining that peace to South Asia passes through Kashmir," he said. The former Chief Town Planner, M S Pampori said that India was exploiting the economic resources of Kashmiris. Among others Professor Fida Hasnain, Dr Haseeb Drabu, Professor Aslam, Professor Ahad, Dr Mirza Ashraf Baig and Vice Chancellor of the Kashmir University, Professor Riyaz Punjabi also spoke on the occasion.
