World Food Programme (WFP) praised the Punjab government in its efforts for the relief and rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs), but asked for an enhancement in the quota of "atta" being supplied by the provincial government to the relief camps.
Sources in the PML-N told Business Recorder, here on Wednesday that WFP's representative in Pakistan, Wolfgang Herbinger, met Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif in Lahore and discussed matters pertaining to relief and rehabilitation of the displaced persons of Swat.
Sources claimed that the Chief Minister has constituted a committee headed by Senior Advisor to CM Sardar Zulifqar Ali Khosa, comprising of Senator Ishaq Dar and Pervaiz Malik, to provide more "atta" to the IDPs. It may be mentioned that the Punjab government is providing free atta to the internally displaced persons staying at the relief camps and 4000 atta bags are being sent for this purpose on a daily basis.
The World Food Programme is also distributing atta among the affectees. Sources also claimed that World Food Programme representative also assured the Punjab Government of their co operation in improving the Sasti Roti Scheme and the Punjab Food Support Programme.
Furthermore, the WFP has started providing monthly food rations to families returning home to the tribal areas, following the recent upsurge in fighting in the NWFP. The WFP is currently reaching 100,000 beneficiaries every day, through 35 humanitarian hubs and 10 distribution points within the relief camps.
