A man in Bangladesh exploded home-made bombs strapped to his body on Wednesday as he tried to avoid arrest for holding two people hostage, police said. The 40-year-old man was left seriously injured and a police officer hurt as the five-hour hostage drama at a state-run telecom office in the north-eastern town of Habiganj came to an end.
"We hurled powdered chilly and shot twice as he tried to escape the scene," said local police chief Subyan Chakma. "He set off four bombs strapped in his waist as our officers tried to grab him. The hostages were a Bangladesh Telecommunications Company engineer and a boy, police said, adding both were rescued unharmed.
