British Foreign Secretary David Miliband called on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif on Thursday and discussed bilateral relations between the two countries. Miliband said that he saw greater political consensus in Pakistan on countering "a multi-headed insurgency" which poses a grave threat to the country.
Miliband praised President Asif Ali Zardari and opposition leader Nawaz Sharif for forging a united front against terrorism, saying it took courage, compromise and vision. Nawaz Sharif urged Britain to play a role in convincing the United States to stop drone attacks in the country's northern areas.
He told UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs David Miliband that drone attacks were counterproductive and fuelling anti-west sentiments among Pakistanis. Earlier, Miliband met Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and told afterwards that UK completely backs the democratic government of Pakistan.
