The car sales significantly increased by 51 percent to 8,560 units in the first month of FY10 (July 2009) as compared to 5,669 units in the same months in FY09. According to latest figures released by Pakistan Auto Manufacturers Association (PAMA), the LCV and pickup sales declined by 24 percent to 1,336 units in the period under review against 1,749 units in the same period last year.
However, the overall auto sales (car, LCV and pickup) improved by 33 percent on year-on-year basis to 9,896 units in the first month of current fiscal year against 7,418 units in the same month a year ago. "Except Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML), all the auto assembler recorded significant increase in volumetric sales," Abdul Azeem, an analyst at Invest Capital Securities said.
On a model-wise basis, Indus Motor's Corolla sales increased to 3100 units from 298 units owing to the limited availability due to launch of new model in August 2008. Honda's Civic and City sales increased 454 units and 686 units, respectively.
In lower engine capacity segment, Suzuki Alto and Cultus posted a growth of 48 percent (629 units) and 39 percent (909 units) respectively. Indus Motor's Coure recorded the highest year-on-year fall of 64 percent to 331 units. Sales in the LCV and pickup segment declined by 24 percent on yearly basis to 13000 units. DFML's Shehzore sales declined by 55 percent to 111 units and Suzuki's Ravi sales dropped by 15 percent to 1,018 units. However, Indus's Hilux recorded the greatest increase in sales of 62 percent to 131 units.
On month-on-month basis, the auto sales rose by 9 percent to 99000 units in July-09 as compared to June 2009. The increase was observed only in the car segment, which witnessed a rise of 13 percent while LCV and pickup segments sales reduced by 14 percent.
Honda Car recorded the greatest increase in month-on-month sales of 32 percent to 1100 units with both Civic and City sales rose by 12.4 percent and 49.8 percent respectively.
The production of City increased by a notable 45.5 percent on monthly basis to 537 units. On the other hand, Corolla sales rose by only 2.8 percent to 3100 units, as the new Corolla model has slowly started to gain attraction. Current reduction in Suzuki's Mehran and Bolan sales price boosted the unit sales by 21 percent (1400 units) and 69.5 percent (946 units) respectively. A 79 percent increase in Hilux (Indus) sales was observed.
DFML's Shehzore and Sigma's Defender sales were the breaking factor behind the drop in LCV and pickup segments sales, which were down by 36 percent (111 units) and 59 percent (71 units). In the first month of FY10, only Indus managed to increase their market shares by 19bps on year-on-year basis to 36.2 percent. PSMC's market share declined by 12bps to 50.2 percent, while that of Honda Car declined by 5bps to 13.3 percent.
