Director General Political, Foreign and Commonwealth Office UK, Mark L. Grant met Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif at Chief Minister's Secretariat here on Wednesday. Law and order situation in the region, co-operation in different sectors as well as matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting.
Talking to the British official, the Chief Minister said that Punjab government was attaching top priority to the maintenance of law and order in the province and a comprehensive strategy had been adopted for this purpose. He said that efficiency of law-enforcement agencies had been improved for elimination of terrorism and protection of life and property of citizens.
He said that 10,000 police constables had been recruited purely on merit while the strength of Elite Force had also been doubled and it was being trained on modern lines to meet any untoward situation. He said that a Rapid Response Force had been set up for dealing with incidents of terrorism whereas training of police had been improved with the help of army. He said that in addition to better facilities to police force, the amount of assistance for the families of police martyrs had been increased to Rs 3 million.

Grant appreciated the measures taken by the Punjab government for the development of the province and said that Britain would continue to extend cooperation to Punjab government for the uplift of various sectors. Provincial Ministers Rana Sanaullah Khan, Sardar Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa, Chief Secretary and Administrative Secretaries of various departments were also present on the occasion.
