Two British soldiers have been killed by an explosion while on a routine foot patrol in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Friday. The deaths, which occurred on Thursday morning near Sangin, north Helmand Province, take total UK fatalities since the invasion in 2001 to 206, it said.
The ministry also said it was still investigating what had led a Chinook helicopter to make an emergency landing in southern Afghanistan on Thursday following an engine fire. The crew escaped unhurt but the helicopter was later deliberately destroyed by a coalition airstrike to stop it falling into Taliban hands.
