Karachiites are facing over 12 hours daily load shedding, as a unit of Bin Qasim Thermal Power Plant (BQTPP) and Korangi Thermal Power Station of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and an Independent Power Producer (IPP) have been closed due to technical faults and other reasons, which pushed up the power shortfall being faced by the utility to 550 megawatts.
According to sources, Gul Ahmed Energy Limited (GAEL), one of the three IPPs, which supply at least 125 MWs to KESC, has been switched off for the last two days due to the non-payment of operational charges by the company. The utility has also not paid the Rs 3.25 billion outstanding dues of the IPP.
They said a unit of Bin Qasim Thermal Power Plant (BQTPP) and Korangi Thermal Power Station of KESC, having power generation capacity of at least 200 MWs each, have been dysfunctional for the last two days. The closure of the units have widened the supply and demand gap due to which people are enduring power outages for an hour after every one hour in the city.
With the closure of oil-fired unit of BQTPP, the power generation from the plant has reduced to 650 megawatts out of its total capacity of 1150MWs. Despite the governments' claims that no load shedding is being carried out in Iftar and Sehri timings, people of the metropolis are braving hours long load shedding even during Iftar and Sehri timings. Residents of Korangi, Keamari and Surjani complained that they were facing power outage for 30 minutes after every 30 minutes on Sunday's night.
