President of Pakistan and Co-Chairperson of PPP Asif Ali Zardari has given instructions to the concerned quarters to prepare a comprehensive plan to accelerate developmental activities in Gilgit-Baltistan. President PPP Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah, while addressing a press conference here, stated this. He informed that recently a 20-member delegation, led by him met President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr Islamabad.
The President on the occasion said that first ever reforms were introduced by the then great leader of PPP, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1972. Then in 1994, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto introduced reforms under LFO, and gave powers to the people through NAs Council.
"We gave internal freedom and all financial, democratic, administrative, judicial, political and developmental powers to the Assembly of Gilgit-Baltistan," the President said, adding that recently the present government of PPP gave great package to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan through the empowerment and self-governance order 2009, which will bring far-reaching results in the life of the people of these remote and backward areas of the country.
Now, there will be a Governor, Chief Minister, Public Service Commission, Chief Election Commissioner and own Auditor General of Gilgit-Baltistan. Most important step was the formation of Gilgit and Baltistan Council headed by the Prime Minister of Pakistan like AJK, he added. President Asif Ali Zardari also instructed that work on Gilgit-Skardu Shahrah must be initiated, besides establishment of zonal offices of National Bank, Agricultural Bank, Nadra and House Building Finance Corporation in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Syed Mehdi Shah said that the President had also given assurance that local government would work in Gilgit-Baltistan like other parts of Pakistan. He thanked the President and PPP government for giving reforms package to the people, and described it a gift for the people from PPP government. Federal minister for Information and Broadcasting and Governor Designate for Gilgit-Baltistan Qamar Zaman Kaira, and PPP Provincial and District leaders were also present on this occasion.
