Renowned industrialist Anwaar Ahmed Tata is likely to be elected unopposed as Chairman All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma) because of his unmatched popularity in textile circles. There is a general impression among textile circles that Tata would revive the respect of Aptma besides making it a vibrant association.
Also, said some senior textile millers, a good number of disgruntled members of the association including Tariq Saeed Saigol and Mian Mohammad Mansha are likely to revive their membership with Aptma. It may be noted that a good number of leading Aptma members had parted their ways with Aptma after developing differences with Monnoos on their way of politics in Aptma. These dissidents had stopped paying annual fee to Aptma, creating a big dent in Aptma reputation as an association. Aptma not only lost confidence of its members but also its credibility in the government circles.
This tattered impression of Aptma led to humiliation of textile sector, especially by the economic managers of former President General Pervez Musharraf.
The present regime has though announced first-ever-five-year Textile Policy, aiming at an achieving export target of 25 billion dollar by 2015. It has also notified a few SROs on different counts but still the textile circles are of strong opinion that the Textile Policy initiatives have failed to stir up the textile sector and number defaults is increasing with every passing day.
The textile circles are of the view that Monnoos' politics is over forever. "Every dog has his day," said one disgruntled textile miller who has left Aptma against the politics of Monnoos. According to these circles, the Monnoos have been making wrong selections one after another, resulting into a tarnish image of the Aptma. Interestingly, one Aptma chairman is recently being booked for heavy default and many members have locked their units and switched over to the vegetable business.
It may be noted that Monnoos' have already lost Punjab chairman and Gauhar Ejaz is already elected unopposed. The textile circles have expressed the hope that both Tata and Ejaz would play effective role in reviving the textile industry through hot pursuit of the government policy makers to win the long-awaited relief package. It means that the new Aptma leadership would have to chalk out its policy very carefully to prove their credentials and meet the expectations of textile circles.
