Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Sunday said that his government was in consonance with the principle of growth and the only prescription to survive in the existing tough competition was to become more competitive, quality conscious and innovative.
Speaking at the 2009-Achievement Award Ceremony of Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) the Prime Minister said that the government had developed three-pronged strategy to do away with electricity shortages and problems that include short, midterm and long term solution of them.
Under the short term he said time frame is one-year while in the mid-term strategy problems would be sorted out in one and half year to two and a half-year and the last segment of strategy problems would be solved in five-year period.
He said they were trying to solve problems pertaining to gas and the most important of the problems, which the nation would face, that is water, dams were being built. The Prime Minister said that in future these problems could be faced by the nation.
He said they were making all efforts to solve irritants including NFC Award, FATA, Northern area and other problems. He termed the year 2009-2010 as the year of Industry. He appreciated the efforts of business community in the development of the Country. The Prime Minister optimistically averred that to every wrong there was a remedy. He said the nation had reposed confidence in them and they would deliver the goods to them. He said that he had solved the issue of Thar Coal. He said it was for economic progress that political stability was vital, therefore his government was following a policy of reconciliation, he added. He said the nation had to finish terrorism otherwise flight of capital would be there, he warned.
He said those amendments that had been made in 1973 constitution by Zulifqar Ali Bhutto Shaheed would be done away with. Talking about Council of Common Interest and Concurrent list he said problems regarding them would be removed.
The Prime Minister in the function gave five Businessmen of the Year Gold Medals to Abdul Basit (M/S Grand Parent Poultry (Pvt) Ltd; Ifthikar Hussan (M/S Ishtiaq Steel Group of Industries); Anis Iqbal Sheikh (M/S Al- Fatah Store); Muhammad Saleem {(M/S International Business Management (IBM)}; Mian Muhammad Tahir (M/S Batala Steel). Gillani gave Businesswoman of the Year Award to Talaat Hafeez and Shahida Sarfraz. In Achievement Awards Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gillani gave 16 awards. The recipients were Khalid Pervez; Ali Asghar Malik; Ayaz Sarfraz Malik; Aizad Amin Shaikh; Hammad Rahim; Mian Muhammad Saeed; Javed Iqbal Mughal; Khawaja Jahanzeb Akram; Asif Khan; Atif Akram Shaikh; Hasnain Kazmi; Hamid Raza; Professor Nazir Ahmed; Abdul Rauf; Syed Rehan Hamid Hashmi; Aslam Yusuf.
Earlier Governor Salman Taseer in his address said that currency had been stable, no bank had failed and electricity issues were to be cleared by December. He said there were no political prisoners at present, democracy was well entrenched. He said from President to himself, they were democratically reposed confidence by the nation. He said appreciating Benazir Income Support Programme World Bank was giving $300 million to support this programme.
Earlier Mian Muzaffar Ali President of LCCI in his address said that they at the Chambers strongly believed that economic and business opportunities in the country far exceed a few bottlenecks, that they as a nation were focused on removing, adding that country needed to have strong and independent institutions that would guarantee the continuation and success of a long-term strategic plan of the Country.
APP adds: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the nation will very soon hear good news regarding overcoming gas shortage through use of alternative options. Prime Minister said that people have suffered due to gas shortage in every winter and the government has worked out a remedy to meet the situation by using alternative options, as there is no wrong without remedy.
"We will give solutions of even those issues which remained unsettled during several decades in the past; one of its example is Thar coal project on which work has started", he said. "Water is also one of the major problems, intensity of which is not being felt properly at this stage, and we are working on this issue as well, and we are confident to solve this issue as we have vision, ability and passion to redress the issues", he added.
