Norway wants the five countries that make up the Nordic region to be represented together in the G20 group of the world's major economies, daily Aftenposten reported on Sunday. Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere has written a letter to his four counterparts in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden asking them to consider the possibility of joint representation in the Group of 20, the newspaper said.
"The Nordic region is not seen as one unit, but more as a region or group of countries that act similarly with joint interests," Stoere told Aftenposten.
The five countries are expected to discuss the proposal on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York later this week. Denmark, Finland and Sweden are already represented in the G20 by way of their membership in the European Union, which has a spot. But Norway, like Iceland, is not an EU member state.
