Rates moved both ways on the currency market on Friday as the dollar was in demand by the importers to meet the payment requirements, dealers said. On the interbank market the rupee shed five paisa at 83.15 and 83.20 versus the US currency for buying and selling, they said.
In the final Asian session US dollar held firm against most other major currencies after investors cut short positions and booked profits in higher-yielding currencies ahead of a US payrolls report for September due later in the day. The yen rose broadly as Tokyo's benchmark share average fell further below the key 10,000 mark, prompting some traders to think Japanese retail investors may become hesitant to take risks and invest overseas.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee did not move any side against the dollar for buying and selling at 82.95 and 83.05, dealers said. Meanwhile the rupee gained 30 paisa versus euro for buying and selling at Rs 120.05 and Rs 120.55, they said.
