Police arrested the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik, along with his supporters on Srinagar-Varmul highway. "Police intercepted the JKLF delegation near Mirgund. They arrested Malik, the vice-chairman, Bashir Ahmed Bhat, and others. They were taken to Mirgund Police Station and lodged there," a JKLF spokesman said.
He said the delegation was on its way Varmul to visit the family of a 12-year-old boy, Irfan Ahmad Lone, who was killed in police action. Quoting Malik, the spokesman said Irfan was killed on the birth anniversary of Mahtama Gandhi. "On one hand the government preaches Gandhi's theory of non-violence and on the other its agencies kill an innocent boy on his birth anniversary," he said.
"Using excessive force to deal with the peaceful protesters has become a norm in the Valley. The government and its agencies have trampled the theory of non-violence," he added. The JKLF chairman paid rich tributes to the deceased and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family.
