ICC seeks apology for not returning to Pakistan in 2011

LAHORE: International Cricket Council (ICC) director Giles Clarke has lauded PCB’s efforts for bring international cricket back home and termed PSL final in Lahore as inspirational step in this journey.  

Addressing to press conference in Lahore, the ICC director said it has been a long road since 2008. The 2009 outrage against Sri Lankan coach closed the door of international cricket in the country.

“It’s been a long road and I’m very happy to see international cricket finally return here,” said Giles Clarke, pointing out that Lahore’s successful hosting of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final earlier this year was crucial in making the World XI tour possible.

He also admired Pakistan team for achieving No. 1 ranking in Test cricket as well as wining the Champions Trophy despite not playing in home.

“We should have done, was to come here in 2011, but security advise was against,” Clarke said, adding that “but that’s was not the point. We should have come and I’m sorry about that.”

“Security teams from different countries were present here to review security arrangements for the PSL final, and it was [on that basis that] this World XI tour became possible,” said Clarke.

He also lauded the efforts of Andy Flower - World XI coach - in making the tour possible.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Najam Sethi said, “We welcome you all to Pakistan, and we thank you for making this tour possible.”

“A lot more international cricket can now be expected here next year,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that, World XI has arrived in Pakistan to play three Twenty20 internationals on September 12,13 and 15.
