'Constitutional experts analysing ordinance': government may bring NRO before Parliament after experts' report, says Prime Minister
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said the government is not bringing the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) before the Parliament. Addressing the Parliamentary party meeting of PPP and its allied parties in the National Assembly ahead of the session here on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said constitutional experts were analysing the NRO and it could be brought before the Parliament in the light of their opinion.
He said the government was not hesitant of bringing before the Parliament any bill, including Kerry-Lugar bill and NRO. "We are ready to have discussion on Kerry-Lugar bill in the Parliament if the opposition moves an adjournment motion in this regard," he added.
Giving background to the members of the party, he said this bill was known as Bidden-Lugar bill initially and was launched during the Musharraf government. He said the passage of the bill was a great victory for the political government and for the first time that aid was given to an elected government. He said in the past most of the aid was provided to Pakistan during the military rules.
Gilani reaffirmed his government's resolve towards making Parliament a supreme and sovereign body, saying that his party derives strength from the people of Pakistan and had sacrificed more than any other political party. Gilani said adjournment motion on accountability would be brought before Parliament today (Wednesday) to ensure across the board accountability in a transparent manner.
People's representatives were accountable to the people in the parliamentary system, he said, directing all the members to take question-hour seriously and take pain in making the committee system more effective and meaningful.
Gilani, speaking on Balochistan issue, said the government was in a process of evolving consensus by taking the political leadership of the country on board on the reform package prepared by the Parliamentary Committee headed by Senator Mian Raza Rabbani. The Prime Minister paid rich tributes to the Pakistan Army for their sacrifices in order to protect the life and property of the people of Malakand and Swat. He said militants were on the run and majority had surrendered before the security forces.
He said anti-terrorism laws were being strengthened so that the menace of militancy could be checked effectively. Gilani said the government believed in decency and politics of national reconciliation and at present there was no political prisoner in the country rather the government released all political prisoners and withdrew cases against political leaders. He urged the members of the allied parties to take full interest in the House proceedings and point out public problems.
