Mexican stocks ended up 0.47 percent on Friday driven by America Movil but volume was thinner than usual as investors retreated from some emerging markets ahead of a long weekend. The IPC index of leading shares gained 140.86 points to close at 30,039.71. Mexican markets will operate as usual on Monday, but several other countries, including the United States, will observe Colombus Day and remain closed.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Thursday that the US central bank was ready to tighten monetary policy as the economy picks up. In stock trading, America Movil, the country's leading cell phone operator, rose 1.16 percent to close at 31.35 pesos. Top retailer Walmex finished down 0.90 percent at 47.35 pesos as investors cashed in on five consecutive days of gains.
Walmex posted late on Thursday an 18 percent rise in third-quarter net earnings, above market expectations. Santander raised its rating on Walmex to "buy" from "hold" after the results. In debt trading, the government's benchmark 10-year peso bond bid up 5 basis points to yield 7.81 percent.
